Can we normalize doing nothing, please?

I work with kids. These kids are at my program before and after school, and then some of them have sports/dance/music sometimes all of the above before they finally go home, eat dinner, and go to sleep. Then rinse and repeat everyday, and games and more classes on the weekend, etc.

I’m all for extracurriculars, but this turns into the teen who is not only in the school play, but they’re on the newspaper, the football team, and seven different clubs. In college they take double the courseloads, and then once they graduate…what?

They work themselves raw because they arent used to downtime. They’ve been told they can always be doing something, and they don’t know how to relax. This turns into the adult that has anxiety because there’s nothing left to clean, the adult that desperately wants to watch that TV show but can’t force themselves to sit long enough for it.

Then they turn into the moms and dads who spend all their free time ferrying their kids to extracurriculars.

Like, these kids don’t know what downtime is? I told a kid I did nothing last weekend, and he looked at me like I was crazy. He asked what I was doing this weekend and I said “Probably sleeping, mostly,” and he actually gasped. Then he rattled off a bunch of things I could do, to which I had to stop him.

“No, you don’t understand. I plan on sleeping. I’m booked.”

“But you could–”

“Nah. I’m just gonna rest.”

It was as if I had said a bad word or something. I asked what he does when he gets sick, and he says he goes to practice anyway. I asked him what he does if he doesn’t feel like going, and he said he goes anyway. I asked when he takes time to rest, and he said when he sleeps at night.

Bring back lazy Sundays. Bring back Saturday morning cartoons. Bring back the idea of relaxing and soaking in your day before moving into the next thing. Bring back the right to breathe, the right to rest.

Bring back mental health days, and taking a break. Bring back taking a walk or watching a show or setting a timer to remind yourself to stop cleaning and relax.

If you’re running at 100% all the time with no time to recharge, then your battery is going to die spectacularly, and probably at the worst possible time.

Big mood.

This could be articulated better but like… i think one of the worst things to happen with trump is that people have identified him as like the only evil going on in the world and rather than look at issues in general as they’ve existed before his presidency or in other countries… its all just trump.

An example would be canadians patting themselves on the back because of trumps immigration policies when we have a shitty record with immigration detention, treatment of refugees etc. And unjust deportations are happening like right now in Canada. Its not.. a past thing.

Or the british people staging these protests against trumps uk visit when its pretty gd awful itself.

Everyone focuses on trump because its obvious and easy and requires honestly very limited critical thinking because he’s like a caricature of evil and they get their “feel-good” moments from taking a stand against him when its literally the easiest thing to do and then ignore literally everything else going on around them, stuff that’s been going on long before trump, because that stuff requires more effort, or more self-reflection or more critical engagement..

Speak on it!

Dentist trips make me soooo nervous. I’m going in so my dentist and begin work on a crown for a cracking tooth and I keep getting jabs of anxiety thinking about it. I don’t remember my last crown well but I don’t feel like it was even particularly bad. But that doesn’t seem to matter to my brain 😭😭

My friend was saying some sexist shit jokingly in front of his gf and she straight up started flirting with me. In less than 5 minutes he was all quiet and insecure lmfao

I just wanna thank Hayley Kiyoko for giving me the courage and the cockiness to believe I can steal someone’s girl. I got her number, invited her to a party, and told her I can treat her better than him and she even told me I was her type 💁🏻‍♀️

Art Theft Going Around

So lately it seems some dick is trying to profit off of my Le Dragon Noir picture by selling shirts on Petotee. I’ve had various people report to me that they saw it circling through various ads. I myself actually saw an ad for it while I was browsing Instagram. No matter how many times I report it it seems to keep popping up under different names. Looks like this:

image

It’s obvious the art thief took this off of my redbubble site since that’s the only place I upload the design for t-shirt form with the brush stroke edges. You can see where they shittily removed the watermark in the middle of Toothless cuz there’s a black line going through his arm. The dumbass didn’t even have the wit to remove my artist stamp on the corner WHICH BEARS MY REAL NAME BTW as well as my pseudonym. While it’s an annoyance the only thing I can really do is to keep reporting it where I can. Hopefully if I do it enough times they’ll just give up

I’d like to ask your guy’s favor. If you see an ad for this design floating around on any website like facebook, instagram, etc. that IS NOT my teefury listingredbubble listing, storenvy listings, society 6 listing, or qwertee listing,  under MY NAME  (YoukaiYume) PLEASE let me know and give me the link so I can confirm. If you’d like to help further it would mean a lot if you could help me report it and provide the sources listed above. Thanks so much for all of your help, guys!

Updating with some Signs to look for if you suspect it’s a fake! My Le Dragon Artwork will ALWAYS contain my signature stamp at the far left corner of the picture. There are a lot of listings cropping up in other places and fake redbubble accounts that erase the stamp. If you don’t see it in the corner be immediately suspicious.

If the artwork is being displayed in a print, it has a ragged or black edge. I would never sell this art in print form with that edge. Only on shirts.

Example post on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/987948594683316/photos/a.987953518016157.1073741827.987948594683316/1382553445222827/?type=3&theater

image

Another sign is, that because I am the only one who owns the PNG image to this my listing is the only one where the artwork can go on different colors of products and look natural. Stolen listings, because they saved directly off of the sample artwork, will have a black outline around their products. Like so:

Compare this to my original redbubble listing where I can put this on any color and it still looks fine:

Most of the time, these users are probably stealing more than one piece of artwork from other artists so please check out their profile to see if you see any other theft and try to contact the other artists if you recognize their work. It sucks but together we can minimize the damage it does to people. Thanks so much!

Important twitter thread.

[Caption; A series of tweets by josie duffy rice/ @jduffyrice

Now that we’re all on twitter because of this game, I am making a public service announcement: PLEASE STOP SHARING THAT STORY ABOUT 1500 KIDS MISSING.  The outrage I’ve seen is the result of a total misinterpretation and could SERIOUSLY threaten the children you want to save.

Before I get to it, I’ll answer the question that 99 million ppl will inevitably ask: I know this because I’m a lawyer, i works on criminal justice issues (sometimes incl immigration), and 4 of my closest friends are immigration attorneys dealing with this EXACT THING.

There are two things going on.  1) HHS doesn’t know where 1500 unaccompanied minors are.  2) we are separating parents and children at the border.

These are different.  The kids in 1) were not separated from their parents at the border.  They crossed the border alone* or arrived here without a parent.

That’s not really the point I want to make, though it is important.

These kids were dealt with by ORR, the office of refugee resettlement.  They were released into the care of people that almost always fit within one of these three categories:

1) immediate family  2) extended family  3) other people that the child has a pre-existing relationship with.  If none of these categories apply, then the kids normally stay in a shelter.

(After a number of children were trafficked in 2014, these restrictions got tighter.)

So those kids are released and then they are no longer ORRs responsibility or problem.  THIS IS A GOOD THING.

One analogy I heard from my dear friend who I won’t tag without her permission, is that ORR is basically a jailer.  Do you want the jail keeping track of where every former inmate is?

Now I have more to say about that but before we do that, let’s talk about the word missing.  Basically by all accounts HHS did a cursory reach out to check on these kids, and couldn’t find out where they were exactly.

When I say cursory I mean cursory.  We’re talking about phone calls.  Phone calls! Like, no door knocks.  No checking school records.  They called.  They didn’t find answers.

There are so many reasons why people wouldn’t answer.  Maybe these kids are living with someone undocumented.  Maybe they aren’t but their sponsor is (legitimately) completely scared of immigration authorities in trumps America.

They aren’t missing!  They are almost certainly living with family members who almost certainly don’t want to interact with the government and WE SHOULDN’T ASK THEM TO

ORR’s job is NOT to track and monitor these kids, and it shouldn’t be.  As my friend said, if there were an issue- abuse, or other wrongdoing- it should go through the appropriate agency: children’s services or what have you.  It SHOULDN’T GO THROUGH HHS/ORR or DHS/ICE

When your school loans provider can’t reach you, are you missing?  No.  When your boss can’t find you on a Friday night, are you missing?  No.  They aren’t missing.  Some unanswered phone calls does not a missing child make.

Now, I started out identifying two things that were happening.  The second- the separation of children and their parents at the border- is goddamn unconscionable and sickening.

But DO NOT confuse the two.  The potential for it backfiring is real.  What we’re demanding is that ORR, which works hand in hand with ICE, “keep better track” of kids they basically would like to deport if giving the chance.  We don’t want that!!!

You’re asking immigration authorities IN TRUMP’S AMERICA to BETTER MONITOR UNDOCUMENTED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES.  You don’t want this.  I promise you don’t.

I get it.  It sounds awful.  But at WORST it’s benign.  At best, it’s a GOOD thing that ORR doesn’t know where these kids are.  There’s a reason.  We actually now have pretty strict requirements before we release these kids.  They aren’t all being trafficked.  They aren’t dead.

It doesn’t mean life is easy, but life won’t be easier if ORR starts tracking them.  Trust me.  And trust my brilliant friends who know about this shit and have warned me and are now warning you.  DONT conflate the two things.

AND because some people are obviously taking this as an opportunity to exonerate the president- NO.  Trumps immigration policy is disgusting.  His separation of kids and parents at the border is SICKENING.  He’s a tyrant.  Just don’t conflate them.

Man oh man I forget that at least 50 percent of people on twitter refuse to learn basic reading comprehension.  Tonight should be fun!

*corrected autocorrect/typo in my transcription for the sake of being less confusing, especially for anyone listening to the text rather than reading it visually.

Since I reblogged a post about this issue, here is a correction.

rogueoftimeywimeystuff:

The belief that someone might be faking it means they don’t deserve help is one of the greatest social ills put upon us as a society.

Let me explain:

With every charity there will be at least 5% of people (more or less depending) that look like they don’t deserve to benefit from the charity due to their clothes, phone, ability to walk, looking cis or het, looking white or any outwards sign of privilege that they might seem to show.

In actuality, about 0.01% of these people either do not qualify for the charity in question or actually have the privilege that they look like they have.

An example:

You are at a food bank. Mrs. White come up in a shiny Escalade with 4 kids all piled in the back. She comes in to get food for her, her husband, and her 4 kids. Immediately after they leave, you hear one of the other volunteers criticizing the fact that these “obviously well off individuals” are coming in for food.

In reality: Mrs. White’s husband was in a car accident that cost him his ability to walk for long periods of time, the car, and his ability to work. The insurance company paid for the escalade (a dream car of the husband’s) and disability allows them to keep the house, but Mrs. White is barely able to work part time to take care of her husband and the kids. They rely on the donations at the food bank to get by.

Another example:

You see a pair of people walking in the pride parade that look cis and het and are being affectionate at Pride. You hear someone snarl about invaders.

In reality: They are both trans or Bi and this is their first Pride being out.

Another example:

A person on the internet talks about their experience with Autism and how it means they have a hard time working. They’re self-diagnosed.They’ve gotten jeering comments about how they’re faking it and making it hard for real Auties.

In Reality: They’re autistic but can’t afford a professional diagnosis because they have a hard time working and they showed atypical traits as a kid.

I could go on and on.

I’ve heard it all. From just about anyone. But mostly? Mostly I hear it from people who think that if you don’t fit the stereotype you don’t deserve help. That you must be in the very lowest place you can be before you get help. But that’s simply not how it should be.

We should reach kids before they’re on the verge of death, someone before they’re on the street, a person before they’re grasping at the end of their rope. And if we were able to do this, maybe more people would feel comfortable asking before they had no other option than to beg for the scraps that society can leave them.

Society’s greatest illness isn’t those who fake need, but those who think that that tiny bit of people who don’t need the help asking for it is worth forsaking everyone else who does.
