I feel like this is where my blog qualifies as liminal space again because porn blogs do like and reblog me, regardless of whether I am talking smut or not.
I got a message from a porn blog this morning me informing me they’d made scones for the first time ever because of my blog and they were going to take some home to their grandma at the weekend just like, aww, good for you cumbucket69er*, I’m proud.
*not their real url, but close.
Wait, porn blogs are run by actual people?
Quite a few actually. I did a series of posts about this a while ago, but the sex workers and the people who run nsfw blogs on here were the first ones who started calling me “mom”–they asked if they could for various different reasons and I said sure, why not. After that it kind of caught on for the rest of my followers and it just kept going. And they have remained one of the most active sources of support on my weird little mishmash blog. They might not always reblog because it messes with their aesthetics, but they’re the first ones there with a like and a message when needed.
A while ago when things were bad for me, one of them put all her tip money into my paypal because something I’d written had made her week better. I still get regular little tips into my paypal from them. I get a message everyday from a trans girl working in Romania as a cam girl letting me know she’s safe and hoping I have a good day. I get a message every other day from another girl telling me about how hard it is going back to school but she’s really enjoying it and which Pratchett book she is on. She almost died laughing when she realized the joke about Rosie Palm and her five daughters.
And a lot of their blogs? Filled with awful comments, ranging from people just being creepy, to tumblrs purity police telling them they dont belong and should kill themselves or get an education and blah blah blah.
And sure, I get it, the bots are fucking annoying and the majority of ‘doms’ on this hellsite are disgusting little men pretending to be something they’re not. But yes, porn blogs are run by real people, some of them educated college students, some of them parents, some of them just doing what they need to do to get by. And they deserve better than the bullshit tumblr levies at them 99% of the time.
This is info I didn’t have, thank you. I always thought they were run by bots. I’ve always blocked them but now I may have to think about that. Not sure what to do.
I mean, you do you. I’m not trying to tell anyone “do not block these blogs” if having that kind of content following you makes you feel uncomfortable. I still block blogs that make me itchy under my skin, for instance if the gifs are particularly violent or if it’s clearly being run by a shit daddy dom (oh god there’s so many on this site) then yea, I hit the block button. But my experiences have been wide and varied when it comes to a lot of the nsfw blogs, some of which are just people who like blogging kink pictures, or some who use it to supplement their income as a sex worker through pay per clicks. And while I’m not going to go clicking on a lot of that stuff, I can’t begrudge them doing what they’re doing because shit fam, sex work is hard work. It’s dangerous work, and if you can make a little income in a safe way by running a sex blog from the safety of your own home, and retain control of that income? I will stan you against the haters, I will be right there in your corner because as much as tumblr talks a good feminism and positivity™ game? It still really loves to shit on certain groups of people and go after them with flaming torches and pitchforks.
Especially if those people aren’t in a position to fight back because social stigma is already skewed against them and they know, they know they’ll lose or possibly even get hurt or worse for trying.
So I guess what I’m saying is, use your discretion. If something makes you uncomfortable, deal with it however sits best with you. Blocking is entirely okay. Trust me. They prefer to be mistaken for a bot and blocked, than deal with the people who come onto their blogs every day and tell them they’re subhuman and deserve the violence directed toward them. A little more kindness can go a very long way.
I feel like the majority of “porn blogs” people bitch about are bots though. I don’t mind a real person who does some cam work, likes to post nudes or even does commercial sex work. But I had 150 “porn blogs” follow me in about a 6 hour period and I’m 99% sure they were bots. Why? Because they reused the same images over and over (often in the same position on the page), and because there was a specific violent quality to the mass of images as a whole. Plus there were 150 of them that flooded my inbox overnight… that alone smacks of a bot.
Which makes me feel bad because that influx really affected my tumblr experience (I had to change my blogname to escape it, and it was impossible to block all those blogs without consuming images that left me depressed for several days), to the point where I bitch about it in my header and I no longer tag en-ess-eff-doubleu content. But then when a sweet, nice girl who posts nude selfies reblogged something from me she suddenly freaked out because she thought she had offended me. And no… no girl. You’re fine. It’s OK.
I’m not in the least offended by real people making real content that happens to be explicit and posting it on tumblr. You guys are the real heroes of this site, actually (even if I don’t like the type of content everyone is posting, I still like that you exist.)
But at the same time… the commercial porn bots are more than just a nuisance, they’re a plague. I should not have to look at hundreds of images I find degrading just to block all of them from my inbox.
