Ok I’m absolutely not defending ruffalo here bc his “I’m glad we’re having this conversation. It’s time” is bull fucking shit because trans women have been speaking out abt this issue for decades and he ignored that, but I’m genuinely curious as to what he should be doing abt it at this point? I’m sure he’s like, contractually not allowed to renounce the movie or anything like that yknow. Like, get him, but I’m just wondering how else he should be handling it ?

He’s the producer of the film. He can literally do whatever he wants with it. if that’s recasting and reshooting certain scenes, then he has the power to do that. If it’s scrapping the film and eating the cost, he can do that. if it’s heavily editing it and including educational segments bookending the film and apologizing for the transmisogyny, so that this ‘conversation’ doesn’t have to happen again, and donating all profits to trans-centered charities, as well as his own earnings (and pressuring for Bomer’s, and Lynch’s) he can do that.

He’s not an employee in this context. He’s essentially the employer. He got himself in this mess by pushing this project through despite trans folk telling him it was wrong and transphobic every step of the way.

Now he comes out after the fact with the tweets about starting a conversation and crap. No.

He got himself into the mess. If he prioritizes profit (gained by exploiting trans women) over the well-being of trans women, he has the power to do that, but he doesn’t have to release the film. he doesn’t have to release it in its current form. He can make alterations. it might be expensive, but he’s Mark Ruffalo and he got himself into this mess, he can find his way out.

whatever his contract says (contract with who?), he needs to cancel or rewrite/reshoot the film and eat whatever losses follow from that. if that means he is less obscenely rich or even if he ends up personally poor (as if), he’ll just have to accept that. if failing his investors means he’s no longer allowed to work in the movie business and that’s the end of his film career, he’ll just have to accept that. anything less is continuing to profit off exploitation and distortion of trans women and encouraging violence against us.

i mean god forbid a rich white man might end up out of pocket.

but he didn’t listen to trans women before sinking money into this movie and he won’t listen now, and we are fully justified in calling him the scum he is.
