So about those comments on Ryan Potter campaigning for the role. There was that one tweet that listed the DCEU actors and said they didn’t campaign for the role because “they’re professionals” and it was obviously throwing shade at Ryan for his video. There’s also people saying “Actors who campaign for roles never get them.” and things like that.
The second thing is not completely wrong. Yeah, at times, actors who campaign don’t get the role. But if we’re being real, there’s no way to tell if they didn’t get the roles specifically because they were campaigning.
To say that actors who campaign never get a role is simply not true. If we recall, Vin Diesel campaigned for the role of Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy. Obviously that worked out. The reason the Deadpool movie happened is because Ryan Reynolds campaigned for it. The massive fan support is what pushed the studio into making the movie. Joe Manganiello even campaigned to play Deathstroke a few years ago. Sometimes campaigning works, and yes, sometimes it doesn’t.
In Ryan’s case, I think this is a little different because Tim is typically a white character in the comics. So I feel like it was almost necessary for him to campaign if he wanted the role, because it’s possible they wouldn’t have considered Asian actors until he said something. Now that he’s said something, it’s more possible that they’ll cast an Asian actor as Tim, whether it’s him or not (hopefully it’s him.). I think poc actors are often put into a position where they need to do things like this to get noticed because if they don’t, they’ll be overlooked. I really don’t think campaigning for this role is going to hurt him. He’s getting his name out there. And at the very least, he’ll start a conversation for a poc Tim Drake or whichever Robin is in the movie.
Honestly, the only thing going against him is the fact that we don’t even know if Tim is in this movie.
