This image hurts my brain more than the original debate ever did. Brains are dumb.

i wanted to like make sure this was legit and stuff so i took a section of the left and stretched it over to the right and jesus fuck

rb for the last pic being the best demonstration by far

I finally learned what it’s called in my psych class! Colour constancy. And like you can guess from looking at the image, it’s all about lighting.

The reason our brains do this is so we can perceive that the same object has the same colour in different lighting. We don’t suddenly think a red apple is a different colour if we see it in the shade instead of the light of day. We can adjust based on the context.

Which is why the original image had so many people arguing back and forth (until we all collectively got sick of it): the lighting is ambiguous. Is the dress in shadow or is it well-lit? We didn’t really know. It can be hard for our brains to tell if we don’t have the context.

Or as Buzzfeed put it:

… But if you’re wondering, it’s black and blue.
