Man, I’ve been hearing this come up more and more. Friends of mine seem to be using like-sounding arguments, and it makes me really uncomfortable, and I hadn’t been able to 100% articulate it, but this post pretty much nails it on the head, thanks.
I mean, I think the thought process is that once the bigots realize that they could become targets too, they’ll realize how terrible this whole idea was. But as a post I saw recently pointed out, part of what’s going on is about gender performance. Bigots don’t care if it’s transgender women or ‘butch hippie liberal’ cis women who get harassed. I mean, the later is just a side benefit in the mind of bigots that those not adhering to the gender norms are getting harassed, but what they want is that transgender people didn’t exist, and it’s all just so gross.
