telling women to “stay in STEM!!!(/academia in general)” is completely useless if the men in academia still aren’t taught not to disrespect women in academia, harrass them, devalue them, abuse them.

like this may come as a surprise but…so many women who enter academia leave it not because women as a whole lack motivation, but because it is an actively hostile environment for them lmao

we had a campus wide email thread about this at school there was an event going on that was intended to encourage more diversity in STEM but all the responsibility was put on the underrepresented people like they literally said “calling all underrepresented minorities blah blah blah tell your stories about being in stem to inspire and encourage others to join or stay in the field” and gave all these statistics about numbers drop out rates and retention but they were insinuating that these underrepresented people are just inherently not interested in stem fields or something so this dude was like *reply all* “why don’t you start with the institutionalized hostility and lack of support first, underrepresented minorities already have the odds stacked against them and to ask them to do an additional service like this is a big ask…and to not expect the same from the institution or other privileged groups in stem…wtf…. AND to assume that we are ‘uninspired’ to be in stem is ridiculous” and it set off a shit storm with all the racists and misogynists on campus especially all the professors and school staff! it cleared my skin tbh
