That thing about the US National Parks Service report on LGBTQ places is going around and I’m frankly kinda bummed that the Tom of Finland house isn’t mentioned. Because no only was Tom of Finland a phenomenally influential artist, but he also created a foundation to preserve erotic art in the face of the HIV/AIDS crisis. Many works of art were being literally thrown in the trash by family members of deceased gay men because their next-of-kin didn’t realize the artistic importance. Tom of Finland and his partner/benefactor worked together to provide a secure home for that artwork, as well as preserving Tom’s own work and artistic legacy. The Tom of Finland house is the center for the foundations work and Los Angeles has listed it as a historic-cultural monument.
I don’t know if the foundation actually cares about the National Park Service at all, but its a really interesting LGBTQ historic place.
