this is why shouting “just adopt!!!” is a bullshit argument amongst pro-lifers bc there are laws like this that prevent a lot of people from adopting.

I live in Texas and the way the local newspapers turned the story was just that new laws are being passed to protect children from abuse in the foster/adoption system (hiring more caseworkers, giving CPS a bigger budget, and allowing “non-profit agencies…a greater role in assisting the state in placing foster-care children and in adoption services” which, because non-profits are often religious/Christian, can refuse to place kids with non-Christian/LGBT/etc. families (”this bill could keep them from being sued”). The Texas Senate and House as well as Gov. Abbott are saying that it’s just a way of increasing capacity in an overloaded system and that it’s in children’s “best interests” (idk why they couldn’t just put anti-discrimination restrictions on agencies that choose to work with the state if that is really the case though). Abbott is definitely someone who only cares about protecting conservative Christian interests in the name of religious freedom.
