Working with kids has taught me this very important thing, which is kinda obvious but we forget it all the time and that is:
They exist here and now, not in some nebulous concept of ‘childhood’.
Your nostalgia doesn’t mean shit. These kids are gonna see things you can’t even imagine and are, right now, experiencing the world in a way you can’t fully understand. Respect that. Try to let go of the idea that your childhood was more significant or richer in experience, it’s ok to feel that way but nobody gives a shit, especially these kids who have their own childhoods to live and don’t need your negativity.
There are new books, new movies, new toys, new games, new habits, new rules, new rebellions, new versions of old things, new versions of classic things, new perspectives, new PEOPLE.
And if you wanna bring in stuff from your childhood to share with these new people, by all means do. Maybe they’ll love it. Maybe they won’t. Either way you get over your nostalgia and respect that.
