Okay, this is great.
But it really bugs me that no one realized that un-contracting that sentence, “Why can’t you get me some ice cream?” would actually look like “Why can you not get me some ice cream?” and like, honestly, isn’t that far more bizarre?
I’d be curious to see the evolution of ‘don’t’ actually, as I do vaguely remember an English class that talked about how unique ‘don’t’ is since it’s really moving words around, and how the ‘you’ then gets introduced.
Because “Do not dare!” is probably the un-contracted version of “Don’t you dare!” really. But it’s been too many years since my English classes…. ¯_(ツ)_/¯ (and how ‘do you not dare’ becomes a question no matter how you say it)
