Watch: Serena Williams just masterfully defended herself against a manipulative reporter and gave us all a world class lesson in self love at the same time

There are 101 ways this exchange could’ve gone differently. However, Williams’ concise directive, “You should apologize,” did more than demand kindness. It demanded accountability for rudeness. Well done. This is truly the perfect lesson in “How to respond to respond rude people in 2017.”

Excellent!

She splattered him like a juicy bug hitting the windshield at 90mph

She also gave her opponent the respect she was due, unlike the reporter

I think I’m missing something – what makes ‘scrappy’ an insult in this situation? I’ve only heard ‘scrappy’ used as a compliment meaning tough, tenacious, willing to fight. Is there extra context around using the term to describe a black woman? Or an American/Brit difference that I’m unaware of? (The ‘congrats, but’ does rather imply that it’s not being used positively here.)

She does a beautiful job of dealing with him and praises her opponent in the process. That’s grace under pressure.

I could be missing some context, but scrappy tends to mean unpolished. You talk about scrappy kids or scrappy dogs–they get the job done but noticeably lack grace and precision. Scrappy: “consisting of disorganized, untidy, or incomplete parts.”

So the reporter is essentially saying ‘good win but you looked bad doing it.’ It also makes it look like she won out of luck or untrained determination.

No matter how you put it, it’s making her accomplishment Less.

Did that make sense?
