Does Galavant get better?
Because I tried watching the pilot and it did about 5 different offensive tropes I can’t stand in the span of a half hour, including but not limited to:
- amazing warrior woman trains up loser hero until he inexplicably becomes better than her at the thing she’s been training him in
- he treats her like a nagging mother – so they’re probably going to fall in love over the course of the next two or three seasons
- female character is a hot narcissistic moneygrubbing sl*t – the only reason her character exists is so the audience will empathize with the boring mediocre white men she has relationships with, at her expense
- brown sidekick gets beaten up/injured at least twice per episode for the lolz
Like I kind of want to give it a shot because I like musical comedies, especially period musical comedies, and I like the one WOC character.
But the pilot is so awful?!?
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen all of these tropes repeated a couple times throughout the show. The hot female character isn’t really humanized at all imo until season 2 but never as much as the male characters. The nagging trope thing goes on for the majority of season 1. I don’t know if this helps. The WOC does get a lot of screen time but they never use the squire to an extent that I’d like but he’s definitely in all the episodes.
Edit: I didn’t answer whether or not it gets better at all. It’s been a long time since I watched it. I think what you saw is largely what you get. The female mc is consistently smart, resourceful, and awesome tho she also consistently fits the ‘nag’ trope with Galavant specifically. Galavant doesn’t change much but definitely gets more into the mission so we at least don’t need her convincing him the whole time. I’m really trying to think of what kept me watching but it was mostly the female mc that kept me going-that and the fun music and ridiculous humor that at least isn’t always offensive.
