a message for “allies”
**This transcript is… not professional, I bolded the bits where I could tell Chescaleigh was taking off another person, and italicised all of her lines. Corrections are very welcome.**
Chescaleigh: “Hey there, Snapchat. My eyebrows are on but I’m about to go the fuck off because it’s been a good while. So if you follow me on Tumblr, you already saw that I reblogged this messy ass post about a straight dude on YouTube who makes these super baiting gay videos. This person is notorious for trying to clickbait people into thinking he may be coming out or that he’s naked in his video, which is some early 2000′s style YouTube bullshit. But that’s not the thing that really fucking pisses me off – I am so tired of people begging for fucking cookies for being a decent human being.”
Chescaleigh (her speech is rapid and her voice becoming high-pitched, too loud and overenthusiastic): “Hey everyone, I’m straight but I’m totally okay with people being gay! I just want everyone to knoiw I’m straight but I’m okay with you being gay. I just want everyone to know how progressive I am because gay people don’t repulse me – even though I’m straight. Like, I’m so straight.”
Chescaleigh (thankfully, she has returned to he own speech patterns): “Please shut the fuck up. Like, seriously it’s so embarrassing. And I – really. Straight folks we need to call more of us out. It’s – ugh! Oh, like Macklemore is like the number one! Remember that song where he’s like-”
Chescaleigh (momentarily turning into Macklemore): “It’s okay to be gay but I’m not gay – but it’s cool to be gay but I’m not gay though.”
Chescaleigh (back to herself again): “You want to show me how much of an Ally youare to members of another community, why not let those people fucking speak for themselves?! I swear, every single one of those dude’s videos are just him talking about how straight he is but how much he cares about LGBT folks. Here’s an idea, put somebody who knows what the fuck they’re talking about in the fucking video – so it’s not all centered on you.”
Chescaleigh: “Instead of begging everyone else for cookies because you’re so progressive and just care so much about everyone else’s fucking rights, why don’t you bake your own fucking cookies? Forgive me but I’m gonna quote myself, which is kind of douche-y, but I said this over the weekend: activism is like long division, fucking show your work. I see all these people talking about being Allies-”
Chescaleigh (tone becoming nasal and self-important): “I’m an Ally. Hey, everyone, did you know that I’m an Ally? Ally here! Got a little A, right here!”
Checaleigh (back to herself again): “Show don’t tell. Just do the fucking work. Just do the work because it’s important, not just because you want fucking cookies and pats on the head and YouTube views! Look, to do the right thing takes work and its hard and you don’t, a lot of times, get praised for it – actually you usually get shit on. You should do the right thing and stand up for what’s right because it’s the right thing, not because you want lots of credit for doing the right thing.”
Chescaleigh: “And this was inspired by one specific person but this happens all the time, like I get messages from people that say “oh my parents are really racist, but I’m not” or they send me screenshots of something that someone said that was really racist or like really homophobic or just like really generally awful. Like, okay. Like, sis, do you want credit for not being the person that said that awful thing? Here’s an idea – why don’t you call that person out, or call them in, instead of running to tell me about it? You know this happens to me all the time, like people I went to high school with will send me messages on Facebook of something a family member said that’s super racist but then they don’t say anything to them.”
Chescaleigh: “Your Allyship is more than a label, it is a job. It is a constant checking in, and a constant calling in and calling out. It means you have to have the hard conversations with your friends and family members when members of that marginalized community aren’t around to give you cookies! Then, and this is the really important part, then you have to keep that to your fucking self instead of running to go tell everybody what a good thing you did.”
