Mako (lok)

amentaldiversion:

What is this shit, my soup went cold because I had so much to tell about fucking Mako of all people, whaaat.

do I like them: He’s grown on me a lot. (Nice character development there, Bryke.) So for the record, it actually might be the first time ever when I say yes, I really like him!

5 good qualities: Badass motherfucker, has more of a good heart than he lets on, smart, ambitious, courageous.
.
3 bad qualities: Too much of a jerk, cynical, closed-off.

favourite episode/etc: Beyond the Wilds, because of Korra and Mako working side by side and supporting each other in a new-found dynamic. Or maybe it’s not really all that new but more, hmm, straight-forward, honest, clear-cut? You can really see how Mako’s understanding of Korra and his attitude towards her changed (and for the best). Plus later on, that scene with lightning redirecting, damn.

otp: Not really but I’d love for Mako to be in a happy relationship and I can see that happening with how much he’s grown. Now, Wuko is a joke but… is it, really? I like them much more than your regular crackship and I think their dynamic is a lot more promising than what makorra/ masami ever had to offer. If it’s not gonna be this boy, just fucking learn from it, Mako.

brotp: You just have to mention Bolin, they are awesome. But other than his actual brother. there’s only one answer here and it’s Lin Beifong, I will go down with this ship tho it’s def platonic! Is he just her protégé? Is she, possibly, treating him a bit like a son? Or do they feel some kind of kinship, because they’re both a bit fucked-up but will lay their lives for loved ones without second thought? Both are ridiculously talented and overly ambitious badasses and have done a fair share of parenting their younger siblings. Nvmd the details, they just work damn fine together, bringing me sheer joy with every canon interaction.

ot3: None! Not knowing what he really wanted with Asami or Korra and the problems he had with commitment – it has literally nothing to do with it. I think of Mako as a definitely monogamous person, perhaps/ probably a serial monogamist. I love exploring poly dynamics and usually can see it work with everyone but for Mako it’s a firm no.

notp: I’m not saying it’s just because Korra and Asami belong together BUT Mako, sweetheart, neither Korra nor Asami would ever work for you in the long run, I think you know that by now.

best quote: When he’s so done with trying to play the part while recruiting new airbenders and he’s acting is so ridiculous. You will all reap my fire or sth?But You’re the Avatar and I’m an idiot was also nice.

head canon: I don’t think Mako is truly over Korra at the end of Book 4 but I believe he has resigned himself to staying by her side as a friend and this is what he means at the end, that he’s okay with this role and won’t actively pursue her. (Not saying he won’t be jealous and longing af!) What I hope is in store for him later is that bonding with Lin will help him work through his emotions and open up more and also redefine what commitment and loyalty mean to him without it resulting in years of loneliness spent on pining after Korra (which is a possibility but well, Mako dear, listen to your mom chief and try to take better care of yourself and your feelings, too). If he won’t get there on his own, Lin with the help of Bolin will keep setting him up with people and forcing him to spend time on something other than work. All because those are the two people who understand this boy the best and really get that he’s weird and awkward but also very much about love and family.  It’s gonna happen, people.

I don’t remember where (maybe the audio commentary, in that very exchange actually I kind of think), but either Mike or Brian make some throwaway comment about how they imagine Mako will always hold a torch for Korra. I think he even got a little bit of a backlash from it because some people took it to mean he’d never find happiness, but that’s just kind of silly. Lots of people have that person who got away, that it just wouldn’t work out with, but you always kind of wonder. ¯_(ツ)_/¯.

Very good breakdown of Mako. ^_^ I like this. I can feel kind of negatively toward him at times, but I don’t think for reasons totally fair to him. He really is a good guy, I just guess sometimes I’m not sure I find him a great/compelling character.
