I can’t even express how unbelievably sad and upset I am right now.
It’s 2016. Please please stop whitewashing POC characters.
There are so many talented Asian actresses who could’ve played Motoko. Nobody is stopping you from casting Asians for lead roles about asians!!! And what makes me even more upset is that the director originally wanted Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn from upcoming suicide squad) to play motoko and scarjo as backup. There was literally no consideration to find an Asian woman to play her.
What I am glad about is that they cast kitano as aramaki and section 9 is more diverse. But I still don’t understand how besides kitano, all the other main characters are white?
Idk it breaks my heart because I love the majors character so much and have looked up to her for so long because she’s a badass Asian female protagonist and now I feel like even that has been taken away. I know I will not go and see it in theaters.
I wish media would stop casting Asian people only as props, as nerdy unwanted sidekicks, as fetishized and sexual fantasies, as masters of the Mystics and the exotic orient and other blah blah stereotypical bull shit. I wish people could understand how important representation is.
White women constantly tell women of color to “wait your turn” when it comes to our representation in media. Then, when it’s “our turn” (because you’re taking Japanese characters and bringing them to life), a white woman is cast in the role.
All they Reys, Katnisses, Trises, Scarlets, Ripleys, Everlyn Salts, Lucy’s etc in the world only means we’ll be getting MORE of these white female heroines. There’s no trickle down representation when Asian women can’t even play ASIAN roles.

Literally her whole story is in Japan. It centers around (future) Japanese politics. There is no excuse for this.
