Just listen to any of them try to argue against abortion by invoking child support.
“If a pregnant person can choose whether or not to be a parent, then why can’t the father choose whether or not to support them financially”
As though a womb is the same thing as a wallet. As though debiting your checking account is the same thing as consenting to the use of your internal organs.
I’m pro choice and I think men should have a way out of taking care of a child that they don’t want, didn’t know about or weren’t expecting
Yeah, I’m sorry, men are jailed for not paying child support. They have no say in the matter. Meanwhile women have the ability to opt out of the financial and physical toll, as it were. How is this fair?
Child support is a parent’s option out of parenting. It is not analogous to the loss of bodily autonomy that restricting abortion is.
Did you miss the part about being sent to jail? Because that’s pretty much the definition of restricting bodily autonomy. Don’t support double standards, man.
I’m not opposed to refining the current child support system. It’s highly inefficient for one thing, and I’m in favor of a complete overhaul of the criminal justice system. I definitely don’t think debt should result in prison sentences.
But you fundamentally can not compare child support to abortion issues. We’re talking about people trying to control your internal organs against your will here. It’s sort of got it’s own playing field.
I also can’t help but enjoy the fact that someone points out that the pregnant person has the option to ‘opt out’ and yet does not mention the fact that the pregnant person ‘opting out’ means that the other parent gets out too.
But as fandomsandfeminism points out, it’s just not the same. One is an issue of bodily autonomy, the other is after there is a viable human (no longer relying on another human’s organs for life), and the discussion becomes about the best interest of that helpless-now-viable human.
It’s not perfect; it’s not fair, but the two scenarios are Not analogous. They simply aren’t. And if the pregnant person chooses to go through with the pregnancy (and it sounds like the desired solution to this scenario is that they don’t anyway? Because then No Ones’ wallet is hurt…?), that person pays in both they’re physical self As Well as their wallet in Any case…??? (the pregnant person so often ends up being the one to raise said child, and that almost Always means that parent pays the most, financially, for the child.) So they’re still getting the rougher end of the deal here. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
